Timber Treatment and Preservation

Damage to timber falls into two distinct areas, insect attack and fungal attack.
In the UK, the most common insect damage is caused by the Woodworm or Common Furniture Beetle, Anobium Punctatum and the Death Watch Beetle, Xestobium Rufovillosum.

Fungal attack falls into three categories, Dry Rot, caused by the fungus Serpula Lacrymans, Wet Rot caused by a variety of fungi and White Rot which is caused by a group of fungi, chiefly Phellinus Contiguus and Donkioporia Expansa. Timber kept in conditions of less than 20% moisture will be safe from fungal infestation.

All technicians are trained to recognise and correctly identify the cause of timber damage and to recommend and carry out the most effective solution for each occurrence.

Damp Treatment and Proofing

"Rising Damp" is almost unknown, even though many companies do nothing other than injection damp-proofing. Rising damp can only occur with very porous mortar or old and damaged brickwork.

This is why a full and comprehensive survey is an absolute necessity before any attempt is made to eradicate damp in buildings. In the vast majority of cases the damp will be a result of condensation due to inadequate ventilation, bridging of cavity walls by building debris, or broken gutters, downspouts and drains.

In all these cases rectification lies in curing the cause of the problem rather than merely treating the damp area.

Whilst a damp-meter or "Protimeter" can identify there is a problem, it cannot identify the cause, and without knowing the cause it is impossible to determine the correct course of remedial action.

Protimeters are very accurate when used to determine the moisture content of timber, but will not differentiate between surface moisture and water content of less porous materials. This is why a full and complete survey by our trained technicians is an essential first step in eradicating damp.
