Announcements
As this is the last chance I will have to post anything until December, I am going to have to risk confusing some of you by sending out the info about next weekend’s race before this weekend’s one has taken place! The 3rd Met League race will be taking place in Ruislip on Saturday 29th and full details of the venue, the timetable, how to get there and pretty well everything else are attached below, so I won’t repeat it here.

Just to remind you, there is no limit to how many people can run for the club in the Met League, so everyone who turns up will be able to take part and, as there are 12 per team to score for the men and 6 for the women and we have 2 teams of each, almost everyone will get to score points for the club. We have had excellent turnouts for both Met League races so far so let’s try and keep that going for this one, especially let’s try and get more than 24 finishers for the men instead of more than 24 starters as has been the case both times so far!

A couple of notes about the course itself. The only dodgy bit is the start, which is far too narrow and will be a real mess (especially for the men), though at least it isn’t dangerous like the start at Claybury. Once you get off the start/finish field it becomes a challenging but not horribly difficult 2 lap run through the woods, until you emerge again for the final 100 metres or so sprint to the finish. Apparently it will be the same course as for last Saturday’s NLCCA champs except run in reverse. If anything the distance, for the men anyway, is slightly more than the advertised 8k.

Although I won’t be in the office until after the race I will be back from my holiday and will be racing. I will be driving from Finsbury Park leaving at 12.00 and may have a space or 2 in my car. If you would like a lift then don’t e-mail me as I won’t read it in time, instead wait until Friday 28th and then text or call me on 07881 541128. The same applies if you have any queries about the race, though in that case hopefully you will find someone else to ask before then. I look forward to seeing you and showing off my tan on the day.

This Saturday’s big race is the London Champs at Parliament Hill, a local race for most of us hence no instructions on how to get there. There are various other races going on during the day as well, but the 2 that are of interest to us are as follows:

Senior Women (6k) - 1.40PM
Senior Men (10k) - 2.10PM

The course will be as for the last couple of years, ie: 2x3k laps for the women and 2x2k laps followed by 2x3k laps for the men. Although not as difficult as the course which will be used for the National Champs in February, this route still involves 1 big hill per lap with plenty of other undulations. I suspect it will be pretty muddy too, certainly by the time the men finally get to race, so spikes or something similar will be needed.

I have entered 24 men and 16 women for the race, which should be enough given how many of us I know are going to be away in sunny Lanzarote or elsewhere, but best to turn up in good time in case we do run short of numbers. Those entered are pretty much based on who did the St Albans and Horsenden Relays and the first Met League. Anyone who did at least 2 of those races is definitely entered, those who did 1 probably are, and those who didn’t do any probably aren’t (though there are a couple of exceptions to that rule), but hopefully anyone else will be able to run, just under a pseudonym.

We usually meet alongside the track railings at the Highgate end of the track (ie: near the 100 Metres start), so I assume that will happen again. As I will not be there and nor will Jerry, and I expect Ivor will be marshalling, someone who gets there early will have to pick up the numbers (from the Highgate Harriers hut at the other end of the track) and make sure they remain available for others to take theirs when they turn up, ie: don’t take them round the Heath on your warm up! If we have to hand in any declarations/results then please make sure that is done too. Most importantly, please someone make sure you write down and keep a list of exactly who is actually running in each number and send me an e-mail accordingly, so that when I get the results I know who is who. If anyone feels brave enough to do a write up for the e-group, the website and the local press early next week, then that would be great too. I think Dieter will be there taking pictures so some words to go with them would be handy. I think that is everything, but please ask me tomorrow (after that it will be too late) if you have any questions. I hope you all have good and enjoyable races.

The next Cross Country race of a very busy November is the NLCCA Champs at Ruislip this coming Saturday. Of the 12 races which count towards the Turner Shield and the Lambert Trophy this is probably the least important, so if any of you need a rest with so many races on consecutive weekends this is the one to miss, but the advantage of it is that all the other clubs see it as less important too, so there is more chance of us winning something if we do get decent teams out. The schedule is as follows:

Senior, Under 20 & Vet Women (6k approx) - 2.00PM
Senior, Under 20 & Vet Men (8k approx) - 2.45PM

In the women’s race it is 4 to score for the team and there are also individual medals for the first 3 vets. For the men it is 6 to score with again 3 individual vets medals. I don’t think there are vets team prizes (unfortunately for us) but I may be wrong.

The race HQ is the Hillingdon AC clubhouse on Bury Street in Ruislip and it is possible to park either on the road near the clubhouse or in the car park at the end of Reservoir Road, which is much closer to where the race starts and finishes. There are changing rooms and showers at the clubhouse if you require them and there will be refreshments there after the race. I don’t know if the course will be the traditional Ruislip course or more like the one that was used for last year’s Met League, but either way it will be quite hilly with much of it in woods (so totally the opposite of Wormwood Scrubs) and, despite the good forecast for the rest of this week, I imagine it will be quite muddy so spikes or similar would be advisable.

It isn’t the easiest venue to reach by tube, with the nearest station, Ruislip on the Met line, being a decent length warm-up jog away, so driving or getting a lift is probably preferable if possible, especially if you haven’t been before. I will be driving from Finsbury Park and have at least 1 space in my car, so please contact me if you would like a lift. I will be leaving either at 12 (if I am giving any women a lift) or 12.30 (if not). Any questions, please let me know. See you on Saturday.

There’s an awful lot to get through today, but before I get on to the new stuff just a quick bit about the race I was away for, the London Champs. Firstly thanks to Steve and Kabir who I believe sorted out the numbers on the day, a particularly difficult task given that we had 17 women running when only 16 had been entered, which is presumably the reason why Ursula appears in the official results twice (was there some sort of number sharing going on?)! Thanks too to Dave and Andy for circulating the results and doing a write-up. I will actually include the results again today as I don’t believe Andy included the times last week. I will put the positions as per the London Champs itself, ie ignoring the non-London qualified runners, for the obvious reason that they make everyone’s position a bit better! Unfortunately however there is still 1 runner who I don’t know who it was. I know Mark George didn’t run but can only guess at who took his place. What is particularly unfortunate is that none of Dieter’s excellent photos are of the elusive number 393, so even they don’t help. I can’t believe that there is no one reading this who knows who it was, so can someone please tell me asap.

Our trip to Lanzarote has also been briefly written up by Barbara and no, the Steve Williams who was there was from Garden City not Heathside, but here is the full story. The first race (10k Road Race) took place on a warm and unusually windless day, which suited me rather better than John. Richard however was well ahead of both of us and his only disappointment was that the man finishing 2s ahead of him was also a V40. Anna never quite caught the women’s winner but was a reasonably solid 2nd throughout. The next day (12.5k Ridge Run) was cooler and windier and this, along with the significant amount of off road climbing involved, meant John was much more at home and he overtook me in the overall standings. Richard comfortably beat us both again however with Andy, seemingly struggling a bit, well behind. Anna, despite beating Andy on the day, finished further behind the winner and looked as if she would have to settle for 2nd overall. The 5k beach run was also held in relatively cool conditions, but the lack of rain meant the sand was even softer than usual so the times were particularly slow. Richard does not enjoy this race and sure enough John took the chance to be top Heathsider on the day. Anna doesn’t like it either and didn’t make the top 3 on the day although she held on to 2nd place overall. The final 21k multi-terrain race is mainly downhill but is also mainly against the wind, so I guess those 2 factors pretty much even out time-wise. It was cool at the start but warmed up later and I had easily my best race of the week in staying much closer to the all dominant Richard than I’d expected, while also making up more than the 40s overall lead John had over me before the race. Anna had her best race too, winning on the day with a terrific last kilometer, though there was never any chance of her closing the overall gap. The final results showed Anna as 2nd woman and 1st V40, Richard as 1st Englishman (though there is no prize for that sadly) and 2nd V40, me as 1st V45, John as 3rd V40 and Heathside as 3rd men’s team. The positions listed below are only taking account of people who did all 4 races, again that makes us look better!

There were then 3 races that I know about over the weekend. Our small group of 4 at the Hyde Park 5k were very successful with a particularly good run from Sarah being the highlight, while the 4 in Florence also performed well, particularly Steve and Nigel. The main team race however was the Met League on Saturday, and that was a very up and down day for Heathside. Fortunately we had no runners in the U13 Boys race, as they were all misdirected and ran much too far with the result that the race was declared void. No such problems in the U17 race however where Renat ran very well as he is still towards the bottom end of the age group. The stars on the day were the women however, who followed up their excellent showing at Parliament Hill with their best performance of the 3 league races so far. Ella held on excellently after a very fast start to finish 6th, beating the winners of the NLCCA Champs and the last Sunday League race in so doing, but this time Louise wasn’t able to make it a family 1-2 due to an excellent debut run from Andrea. The Jackies and Ruth followed not too far behind to complete the scoring team. 4th on the day and 4th overall were great results, as was the comfortable win in the Vets category. In fact that title may not be completely out of reach if we can get a really good 4 out for each of the remaining 2 races.

The men unfortunately were a very different story, with the turnouts of 26 and 25 for the first 2 races being followed mystifyingly by just 12 on Saturday. At least all 12 finished however, despite Norman still being hamstrung from Parliament Hill and Dave W being far from fully fit after his injury, not to mention John and I being rather tired and unacclimatised as it was our 5th race in a week and in somewhat cooler and muddier conditions than the previous 4! Martin was the lead man again with George and John in a close battle for 2nd place. Teamwise I think it can best be said that we got away with it. 8th on the day and 6th overall is pretty fortunate given our turnout, and Hillingdon’s strength on the day probably means that 4th overall had been taken out of our reach anyway while 5th should still be obtainable as long as we don’t mess up again. Even the B team, despite not existing on the day, hasn’t dropped much in Div 2. As for the Vets, well 11 of the 12 of us were in that category (congrats to Ed for being the only runner we had of either sex between the ages of 18-35), so we still won on the day and are so far clear we can hardly lose overall. By the way, the next League race will now no longer be in St Albans but in Stevenage. I have no details of the venue beyond that as yet, but will pass them on as soon as I do. Following last weekend's success for London Heathside's men at the North London Cross Country Championships (1st Veterans Team and 3rd Senior Men's Team) in Ruislip, it was the women's turn to take the medals as we took on the southerners too on our home turf - Parliament Hill. Some photographs are available on our website - www.londonheathside.org.uk ( http://www.londonheathside.org.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup)

Ella Waldman claimed individual gold in the junior competition (under 20) with team mate Jaimie Hunter taking the silver medal. The race was included in the main race and the pair helped Heathside senior women to team silver.

The men's team were depleted by the annual warm weather training trip to Lanzarote, but still finished 12th with George Stewart leading the team home in 57th place, followed by Rikki Eriksson in 60th making a welcome return to competition.

There was a 3 way split as to where Heathside runners were competing this weekend with Saturday’s option being the NLCCA Champs at Ruislip. On an undulating but not too muddy woodland course John continued his recent good form to lead the team home, with Andy Owen having a notably better run than previously this season in part due to the gap between the women’s and men’s races being longer than at the Met League thus giving him time to hand over the boys and still have time to warm up! Why Richard decided to race at all given that he had spent the morning at his British Military Fitness training session I’m not sure, but it is a good thing he did as we wouldn’t have come 3rd and got the Bronze medals without him. The Vets team title was more comfortably won however, perhaps unsurprisingly as all 8 of us to run were vets. A little disappointingly only Jayne ran for the women, but she certainly enjoyed the tougher course and had a much better run than the previous week.

Moving on to Sunday, the weekend road race was the Brighton 10K. This is always a high quality race and I suspect the conditions weren’t too bad this year. Julian led the 6 Heathsiders home though sadly he just missed out on a vets’ prize. Behind him the performances were somewhat up and down, though poor Laurence can certainly be excused his run as he was not feeling too good before the race and felt a lot worse after it.

The 3rd race of the weekend was the Sunday League Cross Country at Welwyn. This had the biggest Heathside turnout of the weekend and indeed was probably the best Heathside turnout for a Sunday League race other than one hosted by ourselves for several years. Bibsi had an excellent run in the women’s race, particularly as it was much longer than she has previously been used to, to gain our only top 10 finish of the day, while a full team of 5 followed her in spread over quite a long distance. By the way, the winner of the women’s race had finished 2nd in the NLCCA the previous day. Leading man, in his 1st race for the club for 4 or 5 years, was Rick, though Robert and Ricardo made him work all the way to the finish. Unusually for Heathside our top 4 finishers were all non-vets thus leading to us having a better result in the seniors’ team event than in the vets’ one. Results of these and other races as follows:
