I can't believe that it is the end of November already! I hope that you have heard all about your child/ren's projects, visits and work during Work Week and enjoy looking at all the photos in this week's mag.

This week all of the children have been starting to learn the words to their class songs for the Christmas Concerts, so please support your child/ren at home if they ask.I know that a lot of children have been off sick this week as there seems to be a terrible virus going round at the moment. Please remember to call the office to report any absences to the Learning Mentors.

On Thursday afternoon, all of the KS2 children took part in the national Big Sing -it sounded wonderful, and Tamara's solo was outstanding. Well done to everyone.......let's hope we help to break the world record for the number of school children simultaneously singing ‘You Got to be!' and have our names entered in the Guinness Book of Records.

Jonathan and Clyde's classes have enjoyed visits to the Hackney Museum this week, and have been commended on their excellent behaviour and the quality of questions. Well done Year 3!Thank you to Kasia and Hannah's classes who shared their work with everyone in Sharing assembly this week. Thank you to all the parents who came to support their child/ren.

I hope you have a good weekend.Best Wishes, Jane

We have had a really busy and exciting week at Millfields.

Thank you to Janet Taylor and all the class teachers for organising and participating in all the extra events that took place this week. Thank you also to all the parents, governors and other members of the Millfields community who gave up their time to come in and speak to the pupils about their jobs.

The whole school has really been buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm about the world of work. In Year 6 the week ended with the pupils presenting their ideas to a ‘Dragons Den' panel. All of the children had worked really hard on designs, prototypes, advertising and produced business plans for their fictional company certificates were awarded to groups for Best Presentation, Best Teamwork and Best Investment. Well done to everyone!

Lots of classes also went on visits to businesses and places of work including the Fire Station, The Post office Sorting office, local restaurants and the Bank of England. Well done to Caroline's class who were commended on their behaviour while out on their trip. Thank you to Huw's class who shared their work from this term's topic: Transport. I really loved the train in the shape of a Dragon! Thank you to all the parents who attended to support their children.

I hope everyone has a good weekend. Best wishes, Jane

Thank you to all the children, parents and carers who donated money to this year's Children in need Appeal, and those who also donated cakes to be sold at the cake. We haven't counted all the money yet, but we have definitely raised more than last years £115! Well done!

Well done to Isaac's class who shared their work on Henry VIII and his wives in a play. All of the children worked really hard to learn their lines. Well done.

A big thank you to Gideon (Elias and Jonah's dad) who invited his friend Steven Barnett to come in to run two fantastic assemblies for us this week.

Debi, Janet, Trefor and I have had the opportunity to visit lots of the class lessons this week. We have been observing the teaching and learning that happens in the class as part of our monitoring cycle. There was some fantastic work going on and we were all really impressed with the children's behaviour and attitude to learning. Well done to all the children!

I hope everyone had a good break. I am happy that all of the children have come back full of energy and enthusiasm for the coming weeks. Also, a belated Happy Diwali –I hope everyone enjoyed the celebrations during half term.

Thank you to Angela’s class and Jo’s class for sharing their work in assemblies today. Well done!

A couple of reminders:

SHINE starts again tomorrow; I hope to see lots of Millfields children attending with their friends from other local schools

Remembrance Day is next Tuesday –if you would like to buy a poppy, please see the main office

On Tuesdays, all the assemblies are ‘Challenge Assemblies’ led by the Year Group Leaders; so watch out for your children bringing home challenging questions.Welcome this week to trainee teachers from London Met and the University of Gloucester who are with us for six weeks, working in Nursery, Yr2, Yr3 and Yr5.

I hope that you have enjoyed any Firework displays that you have been to this week, and take care if you are visiting one this weekend.

Best Wishes, Jane

Have a good half-term!

Friday, October 24, 2008

I cannot believe it is the end of half-term already. As usual, it has been an exciting and eventful time for everyone at Millfields.

Trips week ahs been a great success, and all the pupils behaved well and learnt lots from their trips around London. Reception and Year 1 children enjoyed a trip to Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood; Year 2 had a fantastic day out on the Southbank and went on the London Eye; Year 3 visited the Setpoint Centre; Year 4 had a great day out at the Tower of London and Year 6 had day out as guests of the City of London that was supported by the new KPMG City Academy. As well as trips out, the children have also been very busy in school -Year 5 pupils have been baking bread and the Reception children have enjoyed lots of messy play!

Thank you to both Teague and Ashraf’s classes who shared their fantastic work with us in assemblies today. I think we will all be dancing like the children from Ashraf’s class or singing Frere Jacque over half-term like Teague’s class. Well done.

I am really pleased that the Year 5 Peer Mediation training went well, and am really proud of the enthusiasm and commitment that the pupils are showing already. They will be raring to go after the holiday!

Please can I remind you again about labelling your children’s clothes. Lots of clothing goes missing around the school and if there are no names, often clothes do not go back to their rightful owner. Please ensure you take the right clothing home by labelling them with your child’s name.

I hope you all have a happy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing you back on Monday 3rd November. Best Wishes, Jane

Black History Week

Friday, October 17, 2008

It has been a fantastic week of Black History and Diversity celebrations. All of the children as you can see from all the photos below have taken part in drumming workshops; there have been dancing classes, poetry sessions, singing lessons and special assemblies all week. I would like to thank everyone that has been involved in this week's activities. Thank you to the whole school community for getting together to bake, cook, practice, sew, sing and dance for the evening event, but most of all, well done to the children who all performed so well.

Well done this week to our Year 5 and 6 football team who are through to the Hackney finals, and will play again next week to win those medals! Fingers crossed!

Remember next week is Trips week, so if you have not returned your child's slip and/or money, please do so as soon as possible. The teachers have organised lots of great trips, so it should be a good week.

Enjoy the weekend. Best Wishes, Jane

Fantastic behaviour this week

Friday, October 10, 2008

I am so pleased with the children in Year 1 and Year 2 this week. The lining up after play and lunch and the behaviour in assemblies has been outstanding. Well done to all of you and thank you for being so good. The children in Years 3-6 are getting much better at lining up, and are also behaving well in assemblies. Keep it up!

Well done to Mehmet and Julies’ classes for sharing their work in assemblies. The children spoke really well and showed how hard they have been working this term.

A reminder to everyone about the Diversity Evening next week –Thursday 16th October, from 6pm-9pm. I hope to see you all there to enjoy some delicious food, great entertainment and good company!

Also, if you do have a spare hour in the week, and would like to support children’s learning at Millfields, please sign up to be a Reading Volunteer. Reading with an adult at home or at school can make such a difference to a child’s confidence. Please see Leigh or Debi for more details.

Can I also remind you that we do not encourage parents to take their children on extended holidays during school time. If you do need to take time out of school, please ask for a form from the main office.
Thank you for all your support and have a good weekend. Jane
