People with learning disabilities face many challenges. The impact of reduced government spending and changes in policy which are having an impact at local level.
To represent the voice of people with learning disabilities we deliver services such as one to one community advocacy, care act advocacy and health advocacy. We have user lead consultation groups and specialist advocacy for parents with learning disabilities. Along with sports activities for people to exercise, meet people, learn new skills and have fun.
It all began in 1916. At the age of 45, Elfrida Rathbone began teaching in Kings Cross at a special kindergarten started by her cousin, for children deemed ‘uneducable’.
Throughout the years The Elfrida Society, initially known as Elfrida Rathbone Islington, has continued to build on Elfrida’s work with people with learning disabilities, which it continues to do today. The Elfrida Society has a strong record of campaigning for inclusivity and against injustice, and has a cherished community base which provides a range of services for its beneficiaries and its aims are to continue and expand its work.
