Wildlife Photography in Africa

Dr Mark Levy was born in South Africa and is a keen wildlife photographer, with a passionate interest in observing the behaviour of wild animals and birds in their natural habitat. In the last 35 years he has spent many days observing and photographing animals in their natural surroundings in Africa.

He has been fortunate in having the opportunity to get up close and personal with the big cats of Africa, including lions, leopard and cheetah. Have a look through the gallery and you will see his images of Cape hunting dogs (also known as African wild dogs), hyenas, jackal, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and many varied African antelopes (including kudu, impala, Thompsons and Grants Gazelle, and the beautiful Sable antelope. The wildebeeste migration through the masai mara and Serengeti game parks is one of the great wonders of the world; this site features images of this phenomenon.

It is hard to describe the excitement and anticipation when setting out on a game drive in the African bush. Every drive has the potential to provide extremes of frustration as well as excitement and adventure. The honour of being able to share the wilderness with animals who have honed their survival skills to the maximum is incredible. As humans we often take things like being able to pop down to the supermarket for food - for the wild animal predators, securing a meal by hunting prey is often fraught with danger - sometimes involving a life or death struggle. It is often very distressing to watch this process, however this is helped by the understanding that in nature the very essence of survival is often at stake. Furthermore, little is wasted in the bush, the death of one animal often ensures the survival of many others.

This site is the product of many magical hours of observing animals in their unspoilt wilderness areas of Africa, including the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, the Serengeti conservation area in Tanzania, the Okavango Delta in Botswana and various game parks in South Africa.

Safari Notes - Tales from the African Bush

Every so often on safari, extraordinary events unfold in front of our eyes. These usually involve interactions between different species or unusual animal behaviours.

Safari Notes detail some of these fascinating real life dramas which we have photographed - mainly occurring in the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the Masai Mara in Kenya.

Birth of Lion Cubs in the Wild

August 2011

We have just returned from a safari trip to Kenya, where we witnessed the amazing birth of two cute lion cubs, in the wild in the Masai Mara Game Park, while staying at Little Governors Camp. Have a look at the video which has been posted on YouTube.
